Présentation (Abstract in English) avec Michel Herreria lors la conférence annuelle de l’association européenne des universités d’enseignement à distance / EADTU à Poitiers les 17/18 septembre prochains.

Comment les ONG travaillent-elles sur le terrain ? Que réalisent-elles de manière concrète ? Ce fut un des buts de 2 semaines passées avec 3 jeunes étudiants britanniques en Moldavie. Un programme unique grâce à l’ONG catholique internationale CARITAS : séjour dans un centre médico-social géré par CARITAS Moldova et dont la construction a été financée par le gouvernement allemand, refuge pour enfants abandonnés (Gouvernement autrichien), et enfin pendant la deuxième semaine, participation active à un centre aéré qui comptait un centaine d’enfants à Staunceni dans la banlieue de la capitale moldave Chinisau….

Expérience personnelle et professionnelle inoubliable que j’espère faire partager à la rentrée à mes étudiants de LSE. Les Moldaves sont pas non seulement accueillants, la Moldavie, pays de langue et culture romanes fait aussi partie de l’Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie et frappe à la porte de l’Union européenne.

Nous avons eu aussi l’opportunité d’aller en Transnistrie où CARITAS Moldova travaille aussi beaucoup. La Transnistrie russophone fit sécession lors de la chute du communisme et priva en conséquence la Moldavie de sa base industrielle et de son unique centrale électrique. La Moldavie qui compte officiellement 4.5 millions d’habitants (1 million travaillerait à l’étranger) est aujourd’hui le pays le plus pauvre d’Europe et la Transnistrie n’est reconnue que par la Russie.

Back in July 2007 while working on the delivery of a staff training workshop at Reid Hall (Columbia University campus in Paris), Bill Koulopoulos, Stéphane Charitos (Columbia University Language Resource Center, NYC) and myself started to think about obstacles met when a unit or an institution is developing online teaching resources.  Last term, I was also able to attend LSE information systems course IS470 and it helped me a lot to understand technology within organisations.

Here is the abstract of the presentation Bill and I will do at the LLAS conference on 8/9th July, York University (UK):

Despite the bright promise of technology in language education and the ubiquitous presence of computers in institutions of higher education, pedagogically sound integration of technology in language teaching remains limited to « e-learning champions » and a few dedicated staff in many universities in UK and elsewhere. 

This paper identifies four key elements for the adoption of intelligent, high-quality use of technology in the language classroom:

1. Leadership, funding and organizational support provided by senior management
2. Working practices based on collaborative activities and sustained by a Continual and Professional Development programme (CPD)
3. User friendly IT tools such as VLE, E-repositories…
4. Learning technologists offering essential technical and pedagogical support 
   

This approach is based in part on a management model called the Resource Based View of the Firm (RBVF) as defined by Ciborra (1998).

What an honour for me, a French citizen to compete on the fabulous grounds of the Duke of Marlborough’s Estate (Quand Marlborough s’en va en guerre…) and… birthplace of Winston Churchill !!

But why am I asking you to sponsor me ?I went last year to Moldova, one of the poorest countries in Europe and I met amazing people. I discovered what international charity CARITAS was achieving : 1st class social and medical centres, outstanding homeless refuge… This trip was part a major fundraising campaign organised for a few years now by my local parish (St James’, Twickenham) and priest Fr Ulick Loring (former LSE chaplain). I was able to see that the money raised was indeed well spent.

This year we’ve done a pub quiz, the kids did a cycle ride from St James to Windsor Castle and we are organizing a student exchange between our parishes in July/August. I am responsible for taking a group of teenagers out to Molodova for 2 week.

I am now fundraising towards the cost of my journey (Yes it’s cheaper to fly to New York than to Kishinev, the Moldovan capital !!).

Un musée consacré à l’histoire de l’immigration ? Excellente initiative… Cependant la contribution de centaines de milliers de soldats coloniaux a été complétement négligée. Seuls sont mentionnés les volontaires européens (Photo ci-contre)… Aucune référence sur les tirailleurs sénégalais tombés contre les allemands en 1940 dans la campagne lyonnaise… spahis, goumiers et autres soldats de l’Empire venus combattre pour la libération de la France en 1944/5… C’est peut-être parce que ce musée est bien la « Cité Nationale de l’Histoire de l’Immigration » … et de l’Identité Nationale ?
